Imo it's possible though it'd have to somehow not weaken below HU status first
remnant low idk but extratropical cyclones that happens often
I don’t think it’s happened before, but hypothetically it’s possible if a TC’s convection can wane and collapse quicker than its max sustained winds can drop below hurricane-force.
Like Sierra said, this happens many times with hurricanes transitioning into extratropical cyclones.
Officially it's not possible because remnant lows have to be below hurricane force
@Catsarecool558 Oh yeah I forgot. RL is only below storm-force winds. Any higher than that and it’ll just be called “post-tropical”.
it is worth mentioning that briefly Pulasan of last year was classified as a monsoonal typhoon before being overwritten to TS
@CycloneTracker15 Yep. I just found that out. The only exception is Hurricane Calvin (2011), when it was declared a remnant low whilst having storm-force winds.
So now I’m wondering…. the correct terminology would technically be “post-tropical but not extratropical cyclone?” XD
Edit: *I accidentally put TS instead of remnant low. Hopefully you guys knew what I was talking abour*
It's be like how EPac storms are post-tropical, so pretty much a RL but it's post-tropical
@ChilledAntoine Welllll things get a bit more complicated here…
Technically, you could call any tropical cyclone that that became extratropical or a remnant low “post-tropical”, but that wouldn’t fit the actual definition of the term. Extratropical would be a non-tropical frontal system while post-tropical would be a non-tropical NON-frontal system, while a remnant low is a subset of post-tropical except the criteria includes that the system must have lower than storm-force winds.
Hopefully that all makes sense! 😅
(Also I think you meant “declared a remnant low” not “declared a TS”) :)
@CycloneTracker15 Yep. I did mean remnant low. Whoops!
What do you think?
