Why was Tropical Storm Linda 1997 never retired
Must be one of those cases of a country not requesting a name for retirement
Like Gordon (I despise the government of Haiti for that reason)
Luckily Linda wouldn't be used after 1997 in the WPac so it didnt matter
@Jklm45s At the time (in November 1994), the Haitian government was one that came to power due to a military coup that occurred in 1991. The regime was a brutal dictatorship that was known for its human rights abuses, so they’re not exactly the friendliest faces you would expect to request a TC name retirement.
Additionally, a conflict was ongoing in Haiti at the time (Operation Uphold Democracy), which was when a UN-backed US-led coalition of countries (Argentina, Poland, members of CARICOM, among others) invaded Haiti to support opposition forces in restoring the democratic government. Although it didn't escalate into a full-scale war, the following transfer of power and subsequent military occupation by UNMIH forces lasted from September 1994 to March 1995, which is why even after the conflict ended, the new Haitian government didn’t request retirements either since that was the last thing on their mind (they had to rebuild their country first, both physically and politically), so it wasn't really the new Haitian government's fault. Hope this helped! :)
(I’m a history nerd ok 🙏)
They had to change the naming lists from english names to names from the WMO
Ketsana was much worse
@Mastercane F X idk what you mean Ketsana was worse, Linda caused 3,275 fatalities and 777.1 million usd in damages, compared to ketsana causing 700
In my opinion
But typhoon joan (the one that struck vietnam) was much worse than the two that were mentioned, 6-7 6-7.
what 😭 a storm that caused thousands of deaths is objectively worse than a storm that caused 700 deaths, even if they were both very bad
What do you think?
