The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active Atlantic hurricane season on record, featuring 44 named storms, 35 hurricanes, and 13 major hurricanes, which caused a total of $TBD million (2005 USD) in damages. The season officially began on June 1, 2005, and lasted until November 30, 2005. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. However, tropical cyclogenesis is possible at any time of the year, as shown by Tropical Storm Arlene in May and by Hurricane Chi's duration into December and Hurricane Psi's formation in December.

System Names[]
The following list of names was used for named storms that formed in the North Atlantic in 2005. The names not retired from this list were used again in the 2011 season. This is the same list used for the 1999 season, with the exceptions of Chelsea, Holden, and Pedro, which replaced Crystal, Harold, and Philippe. The names Chelsea, Holden, Pedro, Stan, Tammy, Vince, and Wilma, as well as Greek letters beginning with Mu, were used for the first (and only, in the cases of Holden and Stan) time this season.

Storms were named using the Greek alphabet after Wilma.

Retirement[]
The World Meteorological Organization retired three names in the spring of 2006: Holden, Irene, and Stan. They were replaced in the 2011 season by Hunter, Irma, and Sean respectively. The Greek letters Delta, Eta, Omicron, and Rho were also retired.
After the 2003 Atlantic hurricane season, the World Meteorological Organization hurricane committee decided to keep using the Greek letter names as an auxiliary list each year, ultimately determining the retirement of a Greek letter by removing the name from use was not possible. Instead, a storm with a Greek letter deeming retirement would be retired along with the year of occurrence, but the Greek letter would still be used in the future. As shown by the devastating 2005 season, several highly devastating storms with Greek letter names concerned many meteorologists that this policy would ultimately defeat the purpose of name retirement. Therefore, the WMO announced that the use of the Greek list would be ended to avoid confusion. Instead, a supplemental list consisting of 21 given names will be used in the future, which will allow the names to be retired, if the regular naming list is exhausted.
