Starting in the 2006 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the usage of the Greek Alphabet was abolished and replaced with two auxiliary lists rotating between odd and even years plus the addition of X, Y, and Z to the primary lists. However, since the primary naming list for 2006 was not used up, the auxiliary list was not necessary.

In the spring of 2007, the names Gordon, Kirk, Michael, Nadine, and Rafael were retired and will never be used again to name any Atlantic Hurricanes. They were replaced with Gerald, Kameron, Mason, Nola, and Risto respectively for 2012.
