In early to mid January, a symmetric cold-core low was observed over the far northern Battlnoque ocean basin. This low pressure system would occasionally flare up some brief convection while it was tracking southeastwards over 16°C sea surface temperatures. As the sea surface temperatures beneath the system started to reach 20°C the convection started to become more sustained and the overall structure became warmer in nature. The low would then attain hurricane-force winds at 18:00 UTC, January 11 as satellite estimates suggested. The next day around that time, HMC satellites suggested that the system transitioned into a subtropical storm as the deep convection persisted and the system became more warm-core.
