The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season was an average season that featured 28 named storms, 17 hurricanes, and 9 major hurricanes.[1] It was event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation in which storms form in the Atlantic basin. The season officially begun on June 1 and ended on November 30. These dates, adopted by convention, historically describe the period in each year when most subtropical or tropical cyclogenesis occurs in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite this, storms tend to form outside those boundaries, as shown with the first formation of the season, Tropical Storm Andrew, on May 23 and the dissipation of the last system, Hurricane Hank, on December 11.

Storm names[]
The following list of names was used to name storms that form in the North Atlantic in 2022. Retired names will be announced in the following spring. The names not retired from this list will be used again in the 2028 season. This was the same list used in the 2016 season, with the exceptions of Freda, Halima, Kieran, Phoebe, and Tobias, which replaced Fiona, Hermine, Karl, Paige, and Tomas, respectively. All of those names were used for the first time this season.

This is the same auxiliary list as the 2020 season, with the exceptions of Braylen, Imran, Lucio, Mateo, and Orazio, which replaced Bryan, Isaiah, Leo, Marshall, and Osman, respectively. Names not retired from this list will be used again in the 2024 season.

Retirement[]
On March 29, 2023, the names Phoebe, Sadie, Walter, and Dylan were retired due to their destruction they all caused. They will never be used again for another Atlantic storm. They will be replaced by Polly, Scarlett, and Wallace, respectively, for the 2028 season and Deshawn for the 2024 season.
- ↑ For reference, the average WMHB season totals from 2002 to 2021 are 26.8 named storms, 18.8 hurricanes, and 8.2 major hurricanes.
