The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season was a deadly and somewhat destructive season, despite many of the storms being beneath hurricane intensity, primarily due to Arthur causing unprecedented destruction across the Corpus Christi area in July, Josephine killing over 1,000 people primarily in Haiti due to heavy rainfall in September, and Nana, which caused widespread flash flooding across the northeastern United States in October. The season only saw two major hurricanes out of five hurricanes, which can be attributed to the onset of a El Nino event along with the start of a period of suppressed favorability across the basin throughout the season. The season officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30. These dates, adopted by convention, historically describe the period in each year when most tropical cyclogenesis occurs in the Atlantic. However, the formation of subtropical or tropical cyclones is possible at any time of the year, as demonstrated by the formation of a tropical depression in May, the earliest start to a season since 2021, and Subtropical Storm Omar in December, marking the first such occurrence since an unnamed subtropical storm in 2013.

Names[]

This was the list of names used to name tropical and subtropical cyclones with 1-minute sustained winds over 35 knots (40 mph) or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Any names not retired will be used in 2032, and any retired names will be announced in Spring of 2027 at the 49th session of the RA IV Hurricane Committee. This was the same list was used in 2020, with the exception of the name Leah, which replaces the name Laura, marking the first time the name Leah has been used. Any unused names are marked in gray.

Retirement[]

In the spring of 2027, at the 49th session of the RA IV Hurricane Committee, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) retired the names Arthur, Josephine and Nana for the destruction and high death toll caused across Texas, Haiti and the northeastern United States, respectively. The names will never be used to name another Atlantic tropical or subtropical cyclone. They were replaced with Arnold, Jewel, and Noreen, respectively, which will first appear in 2032.
