Erasicane Scott was a deadly and destructive erasicane during the 6314 Atlantic hurricane season, impacting the Gulf Coast in late August.

Meteorological History[]

On August 8, a tropical wave developed into a tropical storm, given the name Scott. It formed over the Cape Verde islands, and it started to strengthen over incredibly warm SSTs of 103 F, caused by a meteorite impact over the Atlantic Ocean. Scott went through explosive intensification, strengthening from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in 36 hours. Even after it moved out from the extremely warm waters, it continued to strengthen due to virtually zero wind shear. It entered the Caribbean as a Category 6, and started to show signs of developing into an erasicane. Before its transformation was complete, Scott made landfall in Cuba, partially erasing the western part of the island, and continued north. It made its final landfall in Gulfport, Mississippi as an erasicane with Category 8 equivalent winds. It erased many major cities, including New Orleans, Jackson, Mobile, Birmingham, and of course, Gulfport. It weakened as it traveled over land, but it still partially erased many other cities, such as Memphis, Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati and Dayton before it weakened back into a regular tropical storm. Scott dissipated over Northern Quebec on September 3.

In total, Scott caused 439,203 deaths and over $39.1 trillion in damage, the vast majority of which occured in the Gulf Coast and the interior Southeast. Due to the extreme death count and catastrophic damage, Scott was retired and was replaced by Sven for the 6320 season.

Global-scale impact[]

Scott's landfall in the Gulf Coast caused not only impact in the US, but across the rest of the world as well. The staggering economic losses in the United States disrupted the global economy as well, due to crops (especially rice) being destroyed in the Southeast. The United States fell into a financial crisis that took about 60 years to recover from, even with aid pouring in from other countries across the globe. The storm became the second deadliest tropical cyclone ever behind the 1970 Bhola cyclone in Bangladesh. It was also the costliest cyclone of all time, as it erased and destroyed many cities, crops and factories.
