The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season was a hyperactive and very destructive season, that resulted in a great loss of life across the Atlantic basin. It featured 20 named storms, 12 hurricanes and 7 major hurricanes. The season officially began on June 1, and ended on November 30. These dates historically describe the period of year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. However, as shown by Hurricane Victor in December, the formation of tropical cyclones is possible at other times of the year. This season was the first on record to feature at least two hurricanes of Category 5 intensity active at the same time: Julian and Larry. Both of these hurricanes would go on to inflict catastrophic damage and loss of life. Alongside Hurricane Kate, it was also the first season to feature three major hurricanes active at once. This was the only season on record to produce multiple hurricanes in June, with Ana and Bill both sustaining Category 1 intensity.
The season began on June 1, 2021. No more than 5 days later, Tropical Storm Ana formed, as the first storm of the season.
