Hurricane Daina was the earliest forming major hurricane of any Atlantic hurricane on record, becoming a Category 3 as early as June 10. Daina formed from a tropical wave in the tropical Atlantic on June 7, steadily intensifying into a hurricane as it entered the eastern Caribbean sea. Daina would reach an eventual peak of 115 mph (185 km/h) as it made landfall in Southwestern Puerto Rico. Gradual weakening took place, as the storm weakened to a Category 2 due to land interaction. Then, the storm began to move into the higher shear and lower sea surface temperatures of the mid-latitudes commonly seen in the early season, causing weakening to fasten eventually resulting in Daina becoming an Extratropical cyclone on June 13.
Daina brought losses of $704.6 million (2055 USD) and 23 deaths, most of which to Puerto Rico though considerable portions of that did result from effects in the Leeward Islands and Hispaniola and a small amount reported from the US Virgin Islands.
